I truly enjoy going to vast fisheries where fish live everywhere because I enjoy going and finding them.  Here the key was in finding fish that would feed despite the fluctuating river levels.  Nothing else affects a river fish like the water level.  On the first day I experienced a bad day of the “dropsies”.  This is where most of the fish that I hooked simply came off in the brush or pulled off the hook near the boat.  The first day I probably hooked 7 or 8 bass but only landed two.  I rarely lose that many in a single day.  On the second day they seemed to have switched preferences because they didn’t bite the Power Hawg that I was using but other competitors caught them on jigs.

This is such a great fishery and yet the Florida strain largemouth can be such a finicky feeder that it’s entirely possible to “fish over the fish”.  By that I mean that I had located a fantastic population of solid keepers that hardly anyone else found during practice.  The problem was that I wasn’t aware how big some of the fish were until I invited my buddy Sean Hoernke to come fish around.  The result was that I caught two limits of keepers without any big bass and Sean figured out how to catch the big bass after I had given up on the area and was looking elsewhere.  I had been throwing a shallow running crankbait through the shallow hydrilla but should have been flipping to the bulrushes in slightly deeper water.
